Building South Bank is simply one element of the Corporation's role. The other part is 'creating the experience' for our millions of visitors to the precinct each year.
With South Brisbane's population expected to double to just under 30,000 residents by 2026 and public spaces becoming more important, the Corporation is planning ahead to ensure that Brisbane people continue to have spaces and places to relax and unwind.
One of our key focus areas is to implement our public open space plan, which aims to reduce the proportion of commercial buildings in the Parklands precinct to make way for more green and recreational spaces for South Bank visitors to enjoy. In January 2009, the Corporation announced that the Boardwalk site will have a major make-over, that will create a new riverfront open space for visitors to the precinct to enjoy.
Grey Street is the place where buildings define the place but the people make the street. Our aim is to work collaboratively with precinct partners to set Grey Street apart from other Australian destinations. This year will see the commencement of the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre (BCEC) expansion and the commencement of construction for the new ABC headquarters.
Little Stanley Street has become one of Brisbane's premier retail precincts, offering an array of dining and shopping experiences. We will continue to work with our tenants to involve them in the emergence of Little Stanley Street as one of Brisbane's most vibrant and bustling destinations.
