Master Plan Redevelopment
South Bank Corporation's pivotal role as a place maker and manager saw the evolution of the 1997-2001 Master Plan Redevelopment.
Five key issues were addressed in the new plan:
- improving access
- strengthening the precinct's identity
- diversifying its offer to the public and business
- improving connectivity with surrounding areas; and
- improving permeability through the precinct
From the Master Plan, three major routes were created for improved access (the South Bank Arbour, Clem Jones Promenade and Grey Street) through the precinct.
Other major outcomes were:
- the replacement of a man-made canal system with a bougainvillea-clad Arbour
- the introduction of river-based community events and new berthing facilities, enabling improved access to the river
- realignment and development of Grey Street into a vibrant retail/commercial strip
- relocation of a high speed busway, and the re-establishment of South Brisbane's traditional street grid
- construction of the Goodwill Bridge, a dedicated pedestrian and cycle bridge connecting South Bank and the City
- development of an underground carpark, cinema complex and the Queensland College of Art.
