Aquativity

Aquativity enables interactive, learning experiences.

Fun, education, excitement, surprise, delight - South Bank's newest attraction, Aquativity, offers all these and more.

The $5 million water education and play park, redeveloped from an under-utilised bush stream playground near Streets Beach, is an exciting celebration of Brisbane and its defining feature, the Brisbane River.

Interactive Waterplay

Through a series of activity nodes featuring interactive, random and constant waterplay elements, children and adults can explore three main themes:

  • Our environmental interactions with the river
  • Indigenous connections to the river; and
  • European settlement patterns as they interact with the river.

The existing Bush Stream provides an active play space linking the nodes, which are designed to engage different age groups.

Each node has a large, six metre feature disk with vibrant designs that express and explain the theme's relationship to the river.

From mist, rain and jets to streams and pools, Aquativity offers the chance to engage in interactive water experiences. Soundscapes, ranging from storm sounds, crowds or urban sounds, and wildlife or Indigenous elements enhance the Aquativity experience.

Linking the river and the elements

Aquativity, which explores the connections between the river and the water cycle, creatively expresses influences such as:

  • Sky-water elements including clouds, the quintessential summer storm and flood events
  • Key native fish/mammal species of mullet and dugong
  • The complexity of the catchments and the importance of the river's tributaries
  • The importance of indigenous, environmental and urban elements of our relationships to the river and the significance it has in our lives.

Through interactive water play, children will learn about the importance of our river system, and water.

Using water responsibly

South Bank Corporation, which runs Aquativity, is commited to responsible water use in the Parklands. Due to current water restrictions, Aquativity's water features are not being operated.

Water used to backwash Aquativity is recycled for use within the Parklands.
